Dish and Diaper Mats

Many months ago I came across Darby's dish mat tutorial.

Fast forward a few months later and I discovered Christian's simpler adaption of this idea on her blog Modobject at home.

These mats are SO useful, I honestly don't know what I did before life without them.

The diaper changing mat is great to take on long car trips, can be easily rolled up and toted in a diaper bag, and would make an awesome baby gift.

The dish mat is perfect for drying pots and pans that are too large for the dishwasher and for not-completely-dried dishes out of the dishwasher. This too would be a fantastic gift!

So here is my attempt at a rough around the edges tutorials. I'm not great at tutorials, but I love to share how I do things and maybe give a little inspiration.

Step 1) Supplies: You will need a piece of fabric (prewashed), a piece of terrycloth (prewashed), and a sewing machine.

I used a large inexpensive towel (from Wal-mart) and cut it in half.

Step 2) Cut your towel and fabric to size of your choosing.

I trimmed off the decorative boarders of my towel as to make the terrycloth easier to work with.

Step 3) Place fabric right side down on terrycloth and sew around edges (about a 1/4" to 1/2'' stitch). Think pillowcase. Leave a 4-5" gap open.

Step 4)
Clip corners. Then using your 4-5" opening, turn mat right side out and stitch up opening.

Step 5)
Lay mat flat and pin around all edges.

Step 6) Sew a 1/2 inch boarder around entire mat.

Step 7)
Give your mat a whirl in the washing machine and dryer. Feel free to iron if you are a serious person or just go on and put them to good use.

Enjoy!

I need that! You could also use the absorbant mat from BBB instead of the towel. I bought one from BBB, but it's of course not as adorable as this is.

I was telling my mom this weekend that I bet SB will like your color quilt; she likes color! Also, I was asking her about what I could make, foodwise! I told her that you already make a fab pumpkin bread. Andrew was talking about grilling out with steaks and such! Can't wait!
