A Good Book

If you are looking for a good book, may I recommend The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. A novel, taking place in the 1960's, about black maids in Jackson, MS and their relationships with the white families they work for. The themes in the book have to do with race, kindness, and overcoming obstacles.

I actually listened to this book on CD and I'm convinced the audio is even better than reading it. The narrators bring the personalities to life in a way that text can not do. Also, I think the Jackson accents are so accurate. My family passed around the 15 disc book on CD all summer. Eight of us listened to it throughout our various travels, trading the discs with one another.

When you finish, you will have a hole in your reading heart. I did not want it to end because I enjoyed it so much.

"Reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad books. "

This quote is from the book I'm currently reading, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows (also a good book!). It pretty much sums up my feelings for The Help.

You locals read it and then let's start a book club.

I loved both "The Help" and "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society." And I agree with you about hearing some books. I've been listening to P.D. James (a wonderful British mystery writer) when I run, and hearing the accents and the descriptions is amazing!!

Love you and love the black and white photos!

I really want to read this book! Most of the books that I am reading right now are written by academia, so it is good to have a well-written novel mixed in.

Thanks for sharing!
